Poster for Directed by John Ford

2 Feb - Tuesday - 7 PM

Directed by John Ford

(2006 - 1 hr. 48 min. - w d Peter Bogdanovich)

In 1971, Peter Bogdanovich completed one of the essential films about American moviemaking. Some 35 years later, he has made it still better. The initial 1971 version of this documentary featured John Wayne, Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart describing how they worked with the master. Interviews with Ford and carefully selected clips from his films offered rare insights into his process. All of that, along with narration by Orson Welles, can be found in the new version; what's new are interviews with Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Walter Hill and Martin Scorsese. Seeing today's great directors talk, with great reverence, about films including "The Searchers" leaves little doubt: nearly 25 years after his death, Ford remains America's most influential filmmaker.

The Rape of Europa (documentary)

(2006 - 1 hr. 57 mon. - Book Lynn Nicholas w d Richard Berge, Bonni Cohen, Nicole Newnham)

The Rape of Europa tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe's art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War.

In a journey through seven countries, the film takes the audience into the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But young art professionals as well as ordinary heroes, from truck drivers to department store clerks, fought back with an extraordinary effort to safeguard, rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures.

The Rape of Europa begins and ends with the story of artist Gustav Klimt's famed Gold Portrait, stolen from Viennese Jews in 1938 and now the most expensive painting ever sold.

Today, more than sixty years later, the legacy of this tragic history continues to play out as families of looted collectors recover major works of art, conservators repair battle damage, and nations fight over the fate of ill-gotten spoils of war.

Joan Allen narrates this breathtaking chronicle about the battle over the very survival of centuries of western culture.

9 Feb - Tuesday - 7 PM

Katyn

(2007 - 2 hr. 1 min. - w Andrzej Mularczyk, Przemyslaw Nowakowski, Wladyslaw Pasikowski, Andrzej Wajda d Andrzej Wajda)

With KATYN, celebrated Polish director Andrzej Wajda delivers a sweeping drama that exposes an oft-overlooked moment in WWII history. After the Nazis stormed into Poland, Stalin ordered Russian soldiers into the country as well, in order to oversee the imprisonment of all Polish officers. As these prisoners fearfully struggled to make sense of what was happening to them, the women in their lives--wives, siblings, mothers, daughters--anxiously awaited their return. Though mystery shrouded the events that were to unfold, these women eventually learned the bitter truth. Sadly, they were ordered to remain silent due to post-war Poland's dependence on Russia. Though he won an honorary Oscar in 2000, Wajda proves with KATYN that he has no intention of slowing down. Based on a novel by Andrzej Mularczyck (POST MORTEM), Wajda elevates it into a work of pure cinema. It helps that he's chosen some truly accomplished collaborators: Pawel Edelman's richly textured cinematography and Krzysztof Penderecki's powerful, resonant score help to further establish an atmosphere of beautiful sorrow. The cast--including Maja Osteszewska, Artur Zmijewski, and Andrzej Chyra--rise to the challenge as well, bringing a humanity and warmth to their characters that pack an even more devastating emotional punch.

A Matter of Life and Death

(1946 - 1 hr. 44 min. - w d Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger)

David Niven (charming as ever) is Peter, a World War II fighter-pilot forced to abandon his burning aircraft sans parachute. Before bailing he recites poetry over the radio to June (Kim Hunter), a pretty American girl positioned in the R.A.F. control tower. Washed ashore, Peter awakes the next morning. Thinking he's in Heaven (despite the fact surely even the most patriotic soul's idea of Heaven doesn't resemble an English beach), he soon realises his mistake and encounters a girl cycling home; it's June, and naturally it's love at first sight. Only there's been a mix-up. Peter's time was up, he was meant to have been taken to Heaven but (cue another sly but tender joke at the English nation's expense, this time concerning the dire climate) he got lost in the fog. A "Conductor" (a deceased French aristocrat, played with devilish glee by Marius Goring) is sent down to fetch him but Peter refuses to go; after all, he argues, his heart and soul now belong to June. A battle commences between this world and the next which can only be decided in one place: the divine court. Will love conquer? And is it really happening or is it all just in Peter's mind?
